United StatesAs someone that loves to play on snow and ice, hardshell pants are an essential component of my winter layering system. However, it can be hard to find a quiver of one that spans the different demands of ski mountaineering and ice climbing. At this, the Cham pant excels. The Schoeller Aerobrane material is impressively waterproof despite being lightweight and about as breathable as hardshell gets. Also, I normally swear by softshells for higher output tours, but I found myself in the Cham pants with hamstring vents open well into spring. On glaciated terrain, the streamlined belt played well with a harness, and large pockets kept the essentials close at hand for long pushes on a rope team. Also, the Cham pant is a great pairing with full zip puffy pants for colder nights on the ice. All in all a great pair of pants for anything that winter has to offer.
The new Cham pant is an awesome upgrade to an old time favorite. The shell material is more durable as is the cuff and gaiter. It still has great venting to let off some heat on the skin up, and it's still warm enough to spin laps on the chairlift mid-winter.
These are my go to cold weather touring pant. Combination of breathability and stretch in a waterproof pant are unmatched. I love the interior mesh pocket with clip for my beacon.
These are beautiful pants. I tried on and purchased models from much larger competitors and returned them all for this. It has a best-in-class avy pocket and belt/waistband system. The mesh avy pocket is just about flawless in design and location. The material is great too. I was worried they'd be too cold in wind or too hot in warm conditions, but they have performed exceptionally well in every conceivable weather except for monsoon rains (haven't worn them in a deluge, but have in a rainstorm--no problems). They breath better than any pant I've ever owned. I think because they breath so well, I can just wear a pair of capilene long underwear on warmer days (up to 40 F) and not worry about it. The vents and fabric keep the pants comfortable. We skinned in bright sun with temps in the very high 30s/low 40s and I didn't even sweat. Pants held up against strong winds in white out conditions in teens (disclosure: haven't worn them in single digit temps yet) and they were perfectly warm even on lift service days. If it ever looks like Strafe will discontinue, I will buy another pair regardless of the state of my current pair. One caveat: the gray shows dirt quickly, as you'd expect, and Grangers couldn't get rid of some of the tougher stains. They look fine, just not ready for lunch in San Moritz. Also, I weighed them on a digital scale and they are lighter than Arcteryx and Patagucci's offerings (to be fair, both companies make gorgeous back country pants, but these are lighter. About 2 oz lighter than Pata's Reconnaissance and lighter still than Arc's touring pant.
1 or 2 backcountry lines in a day just isnt enough. I ain't got time for heavy bulky sweatty ski pants. I want to ski. Lap after lap up and down the mountains of Colorado to 2.5 months on the steep glaciers of the Argentiere in Chamonix. Its comfy, dry, breaths like no other and keeps the storm out. Best touring mountain pant ever.
