Every hiker, biker, and runner in the mountains knows the story. Your day starts out perfectly clear. No wind, no clouds, just pristine mountain blue sky. And then, as temps start to rise, the clouds start forming. Building and building, eventually the clouds gain enough energy that a thunderstorm is imminent. Ideally, by this time you're already coming down from your high point, but even then you can't avoid the certainty of rain. Luckily, you packed your Strafe Scout Jacket. It's light, durable, windproof and waterproof. It's so light and small that you forgot you had it, but thank goodness you did.

The updated M's and W's Scout Jacket is a reliable, lightweight, breathable, packable and windproof/waterproof shell for unpredictable mountain weather. Now built using Pertex® Shield fabric, the new and improved Scout retains the title of the lightest hooded rain shell on the market.

What is Pertex®?

Pertex® has been creating innovative fabrics since 1979. Specializing in very fine yarns, Pertex® is distinctive for its lightweight, packable qualities, and for its softness and quietness. Pertex® originated in the UK and their fabrics are now woven in Japan for access to the most highly specialized yarn spinning and weaving technologies. Our first design with Pertex® materials, the Scout Jacket, features Pertex® Shield 2.5L.

What is Pertex® Shield?

In Pertex®'s own words, the Shield fabric is "for intense pursuits in challenging conditions, where weight and breathability are a priority". The 2.5L version combines a tightly woven face fabric and the Pertex® Shield membrane with a print to protect the inner surface of the membrane. This minimal combination creates a waterproof, breathable, windproof fabric that is lightweight, soft, and very packable.

The Scout Jacket, featuring Pertex® Shield 2.5L, uses a 7-denier nylon ripstop face face fabric with the Shield membrane. The fabric has two-way stretch and offers a 20k/20k waterproof/breathability rating. The Scout has an integrated low profile hood, open underarm venting, strategic elastic, YKK® AquaGuard® Coil zippers and articulated sleeves & elbows that enhance its adaptability for unpredictable forecasts and demanding environments. Weighing just 95g in W's Small and 105g in M's Medium, the Scout is the lightest hooded rain shell on the market.

For the updated Scout Jacket we chose to work with Pertex®, a Japanese supplier well-known for their lightweight and durable fabrics. We're very excited about the 2.5L fabric used in this style, lighter than previous Scout versions, yet still highly waterproof and breathable. Streamlined bonding and low profile seam taping, as well as revised elastic areas at hood, hem, and cuffs, also help bring down the weight. - Pia Halloran, VP of Product and Design

Whether you're pushing limits in the mountains, or simply enjoying the outdoors, the Pertex® Shield Scout Jacket adds a safety margin for unpredictable mountain weather with no penalty of added weight or pack volume.
