October, the prelude to winter, is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Our friend Stephanie Villavicencio is on a mission to raise awareness and support for early detection and women in treatment, especially younger women, with her organization Tits Deep For Breast Cancer.

Tits Deep was in part inspired by our friend and former Strafe-employee Nadine Fernandez, who is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment at 32 years old (Learn More).

Earlier this month, we helped host a Tits Deep awareness event and bike ride, Tits & Trails, at Snowmass. Read on to learn more about the event, about Tits Deep for Breast Cancer in Steph's own words, and how you can support.

Thank you everyone who came out!
Event Recap: Tits & Trails

On Saturday Oct 2, 2021 at our Snowmass Showroom we hosted the Tits and Trails event, along with several other local sponsors. There was a breast cancer awareness and support discussion, then a trail ride amongst the peaking fall colors with the gals, all followed by a hangout session!

"I had no idea that most insurance doesn’t cover checkups or treatment for younger women with breast cancer."

There was some wonderful feedback on the event. Tits Deep provided a safe supportive environment and insightful discussion. When we asked Molly, a registrant of the event, what stood out most from the discussion, she shared, "It was very informative and eye-opening. I had no idea that most insurance doesn’t cover checkups or treatment for younger women with breast cancer." About the ride, Molly said, "It was sick! All the ladies were super rad and it was very empowering to be surrounded by so many incredible women."

Thank you to Stephanie, to everyone who came out for the event, and the Tits Deep community. This will be the first of many!

What does Tits Deep for Breast Cancer do?

We bring awareness to the importance of breast health especially in young women. We also provide outreach to people affected by breast cancer.

Why are you focusing on young women?

Research shows that diagnoses in young women have risen. Women under 40 have the highest mortality rate once diagnosed. Young women lack the support and resources to get annual mammos & ultrasound. We need more people advocating and educating young women, so we are constantly figuring out the best way to do so.

How does Tits Deep relate to younger women?

I have an immediate relation to breast cancer. My whole life I felt ostracized from the bc community. No one ever talked about it. And then when I was 23, two older women in my family asked me to get checked. No help, end of story. I was always ashamed to talk about my, excuse my language, tits. I couldn’t find any local diagnostic centers that offered financial assistance. So I never did anything about it. Tits Deep helped me to start the conversation. And it is so inclusive of younger women. All of a sudden talking about breast health is easier and the more young ladies in our community that can come to us to talk & learn, the more we can address the real problems and health concerns.

Where does your passion come from?

My mother passed away from stage 4 Breast Cancer at the age of 33. My twin brother and I were 2 years old. Our little brother was 9 months old. Breast Cancer has impacted our lives ever since I can remember.

What are your methods for raising money?

Our online merchandise shop, events, and our latest - TD sticker fundraising platform.

How can you help me, my loved one has breast cancer?

We recently launched our fundraising platform where anyone can purchase stickers at cost to start their own fundraising campaign for someone they want to help. A friend out in Boston just bought a box of 500 stickers to raise money for her 31 yr old friend with BC. In the first week they were already ¼ of the way to their goal.

Do you have any future events planned?

Our goal is to host 2 winter events. TBD. And since Tits & Trails was so successful, we’ve already spoken with our local mtb shop sponsor about hosting a women’s ride event in Spring 2022 (think trails rides + desert vibes). I’m also a yoga instructor, I would love to plan a big TD yoga fundraiser! (Any local yoga studios wanna collab?)

What are ways people can get involved?

We have an ambassador program that gives people the opportunity to get out there and advocate for breast cancer & share our mission. We provide each ambassador with stickers to help raise funds.

How has Tits Deep resonated with the mountain community?

Tits Deep is a term we use on the dreamiest of powder days. It’s what we mountain people live for. When people see a Tits Deep logo, whether on a hat or a sticker, people are immediately drawn to it. The beauty is, it instantly creates a conversation for spreading breast cancer awareness. One of my fav instances was, I set up at the Basalt Farmers market every Sunday this summer. One day an old woman walked by, she had to be about 80. She looks at the merch and she just giggles to herself out loud as she passes. I thought, wow, the stoke is ageless.

Are we a nonprofit organization?

I want to keep the transparency. Because we are so new and I never started this thinking it would blow up… no we are not (yet). I have meetings to figure out the best course of action. If it means going the non profit route, I absolutely will take it that direction. I’ll do whatever I need to do to grow this and keep it going so that more people in the breast cancer community can get the help they need.

Tits Deep for Breast Cancer started as 1 box of stickers to raise money for a best friend (diagnosed at 31) with breast cancer. After one week of fundraising I sold out of 300+ stickers and raised over $1k. In two months we raised $11k and that’s when I decided to keep going, to serve more young women.
